“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” —Roald Dahl

this week's note from the universe

There is always something, Erin, to be happy about. Truly happy.

And if you have the audacity to find it and the courage to make it your focus, in spite of the countless temptations to do otherwise, you will have learned well, your life will be transformed, and all things will be added unto you.

“End” game,

Note to self:

Fold your petals up next time.
Your buds are wilting
With the humidity of your urgency.
There’s time
There’s time
There’s time
There’s time
No matter how you feel right now
In your moment of thirst
There’s time.
Now,
Turn your face up to the sun
Roll out your leaves

And grow.

I have a habit of always wanting things to be different than they are. Good for changing what I can, bad for accepting what I cannot.

In the former this dissatisfaction drives my determination to make the world a more beautiful and loving place… In the latter it leaves me pining for inaccurate impersonations of individuals that can easily veer into a nonexistent reality.

It’s like encountering people through an old pane of glass: their outlines get distorted and sometimes my heart gets caught up in seeing figments of rainbows and flashes of light that don’t actually exist. And all too often the glass shatters when I touch it, leaving people standing before me cloaked only in painful truth. So I have no other choice but to walk away, my fingertips bleeding with discontentment.

Just once it would be nice to be pleasantly surprised instead of quietly disappointed…

“Among other things, you’ll find that you’re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You’re by no means alone on that score, you’ll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You’ll learn from them - if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It’s a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn’t education. It’s history. It’s poetry.” —J.D. Salinger, The Catcher In The Rye (via paperlover)

And just when we learned that it would be you, again, who’d change the course of the entire human civilization, we learned that this time you’d do it as an insider, on the ground, amongst the masses, under the alias of Erin Lyons…

Thanks for all the goose bumps, Erin!

“We need the World Bank, the IMF, all the big foundations, and all the governments to admit that, for 30 years, we all blew it, including me when I was President. We were wrong to believe that food was like some other product in international trade, and we all have to go back to a more responsible and sustainable form of agriculture.” —Former US President Bill Clinton, at the UN World Food Day, 2008 (via thegreenstuff)

“Ugly. Is irrelevant. It is an immeasurable insult to a woman, and then supposedly the worst crime you can commit as a woman. But ugly, as beautiful, is an illusion. A matter of taste, a whim, an eye, a beholder, an opinion, a spin, light crossing the frame, paint, projection. The moment. Context.” —Margaret Cho (via cassket)

“Suggesting that women have abortions for “convenience” diminishes the hard work of women and is beyond insulting. Living my dream is my right. Not having my body hijacked, especially when I am doing everything possible to prevent pregnancy, is my right. I refuse to be told that my dreams are inconvenient and should be sacrificed.” —
